BRAD PAEZ, MASTER INTERPRETER MENTOR BIOGRAPHY
Brad Paez is a Master of Social Science (Translation and Interpreting Studies) with Distinction, conferred by RMIT University, where he has trained translation and interpreting students in various positions since 2002. Prior to commencing his company Master Interpreter Mentor he was co-ordinator of the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting and Advanced Diploma of Translating programs at RMIT University for a period for three semesters during 2011-12.
Brad is a part of the international network of professional practitioners helping interpreters and translators become masters of their own destinies. Brad specialises in Sight Translation. Sight Translation, also known in the United States as On-Sight and At-Sight Translation, or in Europe as A-vista translation, is a form of simultaneous interpreting whereby the interpreter reads a document written in one language while interpreting into another language.
In 2012 he published a seminal work “Performance Criteria Descriptors for Cognitive Processing Skills used in Sight Translating” in Current Trends in Translation Teaching and Learning, University of Helsinki Department of Modern Languages. In his work Brad argues that Sight Translation demands a high level of cognitive processing capability, including well trained memory and well controlled linear eye scanning of the written text, with an ability to co-ordinate these processes to optimise effective verbal delivery. His Sight Translation workshop was one of the features of the Biennial Conference of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) in Sydney, Australia in December 2012.
As a fully qualified Vocational Education practitioner with a Graduate Certificate in Careers Counselling Brad is passionate about training and counselling interpreters and translators to find their niche in the translating and interpreting marketplace. In particular he aims to provide career planning and vocational guidance for interpreters and translators.
Since 2006, Brad has been a member of two advisory panels working with the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). He is also a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (MCIL), and a Senior Practitioner member of AUSIT.
During the period 1987 to 1989 he majored in Vietnamese Language Studies at Victoria University, in Melbourne, attaining a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction. Brad has been accredited as a Professional Translator by NAATI since January 2001 and continues to practise daily in freelance interpreting (Vietnamese<>English combination).
